John William Lowery a.k.a John 5

John William Lowery yang lebih dikenal sebagai John 5 adalah seorang gitaris dengan latar belakang musik country, bluegrass, dan blues. Dikenal dengan nama John 5 semenjak bergabung dengan band-nya David Lee Roth. Tapi, kebanyakan orang lebih mengenalnya sebagai gitaris Marilyn Manson, dan sekarang beralih menjadi gitaris White Zombie.  Hal ini membuatnya lebih dikenal sebagai gitaris metal.

John William Lowery mostly known as John 5 is a guitarist with country, bluegrass and blues music background. Known as John 5 since he joined David Lee Roth band. Most people know him as Marilyn Manson guitarist and recently became White Zombie guitarist. This made him widely known as a metal guitarist.

Tapi, buat gw ketertarikan terhadap John 5 ini karena ia menggunakan Fender Telecaster sebagai instrumen utamanya. Sebagai catatan, hanya ada (kalau gak salah, ya..) dua orang gitaris metal yang menggunakan Tele. Satunya Jim Root dari Slipknot dan John 5 ini. Bila Jim Root menggunakan Tele dengan fitur yang cukup minimalis, lain halnya dengan John 5, ia memasang tremolo pada salah satu gitar Telenya. Tapi, John 5 lebih mengeksplorasi dalam segi sound dan tekniknya lebih variatif. Akan halnya, Jim lebih menitikberatkan kepada permainan shredding-nya. Anda bisa dengar permainan keduanya di lagu Black Widow Of La Forte milik John 5 sendiri.

My interest to John 5 is based on the fact that he use Fender Telecaster as his main instrument. I’ve noticed that there’s only two (CMIIW..) metal guitarist that using Tele. Jim Root from Slipknot and John 5 itself. Jim Root using Tele with its minimalist feature, while John 5 attach tremolo on one of his Tele’s guitar. John 5 is exploring more on his sound and technique he had is more varied. While Jim is more often show his shredding guitar play. John 5 menunjukkan bahwa ia tak hanya ahli bermain musik country, tapi metal pun ia rambah. Bisa dilihat dari video John 5 – Sugarfoot Rag yang memainkan musik country tapi dengan gaya rock. Gaya permainannya yang unik cukup menarik perhatian. Ketika ia berakrobat dengan senar di bagian head gitar, bunyi yang dihasilkan terdengar unik –seperti sound yang dihasilkan efek pitch-shifter-. Atau ketika ia memainkan lagu Guns N’ Roses – Welcome To The Jungle, dengan unik ia memainkan bagian vokal Axl Rose, dan ia menunjukkan rasa hormatnya terhadap Slash dengan tidak mengubah bagian solo gitar di lagu tersebut.

John 5 shows that beside he’s good at playing country music, he’s also an expert for metal music. You can see on John 5’s Sugarfoot Rag video which played country music with rock style. His unique gitar play attract us to another different level. For example, when he playing with the string on guitar head, it produce unique sound – as if produced by pitch shifter effect. Or when he play Guns N’ Roses –Welcome To The Jungle song, he‘s uniquely imitate Axl Rose voice part. And he show his respect to Slash by didn’t change Slash’s solo part on the song.
